Sunday was my 32nd half marathon, and Monday I was a little sore. Okay, I was a lot sore. Never have I ever hurt that bad after a race. Not even after my 50 miler this summer! Low mileage due to Stress Reaction, and a tough training cycle had me on my butt on Monday! Legs felt broken from the knees down on Monday.! LOL.
The only thing more sad than that was seeing me hobbling around first thing that morning trying to adult by getting ready for work and care for our two Dachshunds while even they looked at me like I was crazy.
The constant pain every time I moved early this week… or took a breath for that matter… was a constant reminder of crossing the finish line as strong. On that day, during that race, I gave what I had. So, this soreness is welcomed, and as it let up over the week… it was another reminder of what is to come.
I’m not going to mention my leg any more. Even I’m getting tired of hearing about it. I have a little ways to go to be 100% from that and my IT Band is a little pissed from compensating because my leg was wonky. However, I’m going to focus on the good, and what I have to give in each workout. Not what I’m lacking or what’s holding me back.
I’m really really excited about the next training cycle leading up to San Antonio Rock n’ Roll. All about focus and patience… and doing my body good! SO EXCITED!
So, Monday my coach wanted me to do an hour long flush out run. The old me would’ve thought that was crazy. I mean, I looked absolutely ridiculous I couldn’t help but laugh. I could barely get one foot in front of the other and I know people thought I was nuts. I wanted a sign on me that said “Recovery Run, just ran my 32nd Half Marathon”. Then I realized it didn’t matter.
It doesn’t matter what other people think. How fast ones pace may be for the day. The weather, sleep, course, previous day’s workout, current day’s workout… it all factors into the now. The now is all we have. Roll with what you are given in that moment and make the most of it. Every footstep and mile has a purpose. Always remember that and appreciate it! I’m learning a lot along this journey and working with my amazing coach!
So, an hour of running like it was my first time using two legs got done. I was officially flushed and I definitely felt better because of it on Tuesday. I have my athletes do the same things, so I had to lead by example even when no one was watching. Recovery runs are almost more important that the race itself, as this is when your muscles start to heal and adapt. This is going to be an amazing training cycle, I can feel it. If I can ever get my legs back under me, lol! I had stashed the best tasting ice water ever during that hour long run at the hottest point in the day. Was the best thing I have every drank 🙂
While my girls where doing THEIR recovery run on Wednesday, one of the water stops is in front of the UIW and I heard some awesome music playing for the football team’s practice. So, I proceeded to download 4 or 5 of the songs they had blasting. New tunes for running that I’d never heard, yes please!
Wednesday was my rest day and Thursday was pool so I was excited to get in some Friday miles.
I still have the 26.2 brew above that I got a few months ago. I want to say congrats to ALL of the runners who qualified and/or got into next year’s race as I know announcements were this week. I’m proud of you all and I WILL see you there…. hopefully running along side everyone next year. Huge congrats!
Speaking of Friday, I want to share some of my Friday favorites. I’ve had a lot of people asking where I got some items, or more about them from my Instagram stories and posts… so here they are 🙂
Nathan Insulated Running Bottle – I love this thing! I love how it doesn’t slip from hold due to its ability to be tightened to grip. It keeps water cold and has a pocket large enough for a phone and some fuel.
Turmeric Curcumin Capsules Tumeric helps with inflammation and joint pain and I’ve been taking it daily. Pain has definitely gotten better on leg since I bought several weeks ago.
Collagen Powder – Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Helps improve hair, skin, nails, joints and ligaments, and tendon health.
goodr OG Sunglasses (no slip, no bounce, all polarized) These glasses were worn during the half. I LOVE them. They didn’t bounce, move, fog up, nothing. I am ordering more colors as we speak. Plus, they look cool.
To Be a Runner Book – Inspirational – One of my favorite running books. I just purchased another copy today as I gave my other one to one of my Varsity Cross Country Runners.
GU EnergyGel – It’s been with me on almost 300 runs I swear by this stuff. I used the Cold Brew Roctane, which has a little more sodium, caffeine, etc in each Gel. Link below for the Roctane.
Have a wonderful weekend! It’s going to be a busy one!
